Rustic Stenciled Curtains – Stenciling 101

I am a novice at stenciling.

I have done a few little ones here and there, but they usually get all smeary and I end up painting over it or trashing the project. So, when Cutting Edge contacted me about trying one their stencils I jumped at the chance.

You see, I needed to learn and practice and get some confidence, so I decided to start with curtains for my bedroom. I needed something that went with my new headboard, and this was the perfect opportunity. I chose my stencil, Nagoya, and after it arrived I watched a few videos

from the Cutting Edge website and these folks made it look so easy...but really, how is it not going to smear?

I laid out all of my supplies on my kitchen floor,

where I actually  had room to spread out the entire curtain....which is a dropcloth! Then I taped the  my stencil along the edge of the curtain, as I was only planning on doing the four sides of each panel.

I poured my paint in a paint tray and got my little roller covered and then rolled off any excess, you don't want too much paint, that's when you get paint seepage under the stencil.

Don't push too hard, that will also lead to smearing.

But, actually that was the only place I got smearing/seepage. It was turning out pretty good!

I definitely thought this part would get messy. With Cutting Edge stencils, you overlap the design to ensure correct placement.

Once again, I was pleasantly surprised, no messy streaking or paint transfer. The paint really didn't leak onto the bottom of the stencil! It was clean all the way around!

I finished the first side and then readjusted to start the second side...

and then...

this...

FOR THE LOVE...

Cutting Edge didn't count on my stellar planning and forethought! Der, luckily I noticed it quickly and it came right up. After a trip to the garage for an old painting sheet to protect the floor, I really got rolling.

Now, we are getting somewhere!

Then, I decided to get crazy with my old fence wood again. I took 6 boards and mounted them horizontally across my window. I just screwed the suckers right in.

Then, I tried mounting cute knobs up there to hang the curtains from, but it looked weird and too busy. So I guess what I did?

I nailed those curtains into the wood!

Oh yes I did!

I actually think it looks good. Our blinds are completely room darkening so I never need to close the curtains anyway.

I attached these big wrought iron hooks from Hobby Lobby to the wall to use as tie backs.

I absolutely love how it all came together.

I am just moving on this bedroom remodel that snuck up on me.Can't wait to share the entire room in a few weeks!
